Getting the Best From Your Ceramic Bathroom Tiles
Are the ceramic tiles in your bathroom beginning to look a little out of date?
If they are, it may be time to think about replacing them -- or at least giving
them a good clean in order to restore them to their former glory. In this
article we will take a look at how you can make your ceramic tiles look almost
as good as new again, and what to do if you can't, and you want to try replacing
them.
The first thing you need to do is take a good look at the condition that your
ceramic tiles are in. You need to make sure that they're not cracked, and this
can only be done by giving them a good clean first in order to remove grease and
stains made by the use of hard water. Some of the cracks in ceramic tiles can be
very small but they give the tile an overall grubby look and so it's best to
check them periodically to make sure that they are in good condition.
If you find that the old ceramic tiles do have some cracks or have been
scratched during their many years of use, one of the best things -- and easiest
things -- you can do to make them look better is to simply paint them. Since the
ceramic tile is essentially porcelain, you need to choose the correct paint --
and epoxy type -- and then some sand the surface of the tile in order to make it
rough and ready to be painted.
If the tiles are especially cracked or have pieces missing from them the job
becomes a little bit more complicated. You could either take out a whole tile
and replace it with another tile before painting the whole lot, or you could
simply replace that one tile with a different type of tile simply for the sake
of contrast.
Before you can replace a tile, you will need to get the grout out of the wall in
order to dislodge the tile. As with any other DIY job you should take care for
your own safety. When dealing with ceramic tiles -- especially when removing
them -- it is a good idea to wear goggles since a splinter from a ceramic tile
can be very sharp and very dangerous, especially to the eyes.
Always remember that ceramic tiles now come in a much wider range of colors and
patterns than ever before. If you do need to replace the odd one it can looks
very striking to replace just one or two tiles with one carrying a different
design to the rest. With just a little work -- some cleaning and painting -- and
the replacement of just one or two broken tiles you can give your bathroom a
complete makeover in a short period of time.
