Choosing the Right Bathroom Tiles
the main reason for putting tiles into a bathroom is the same now as is
always been -- to protect the walls and floor from the water that is obviously
present in a place where bathing takes place. However, although this main reason
still remains, the range of colors, styles, and sizes of bathroom tiles is now a
huge compared to what it was just 20 or 30 years ago. Go back to the 1960s and
you will find that the choice of bathroom tiles was mainly limited to pastel
colors -- often in pink and greens -- and the design was mundane, with the tiles
arranged in a simple, straightforward row pattern. Nowadays you can find
bathroom tiles in almost any color you like, with a huge range of sizes, and
interior decorators experimenting with setting tiles in all different ways.
Another thing that's changed immensely with bathroom tiles is that ceramic tiles
are not the only choice. Of course ceramic is still a very popular choice -- it
does the job very well after all -- but other materials are making their
presence felt, most notably tiles which are made of glass. As for the size, the
original 4 1/4 inch tile is still around, but the wealth of new sizes gives the
homeowner the opportunity to make the bathroom tiling unique. As well as the new
materials, one of the things it has increased in popularity over the past few
years is hand-painted bathroom tiles, these gave an amazingly unique touch to
any bathroom, and especially when the tiles are set in a distinctive pattern.
Some of the design options that have gained popularity in recent years is to
tile the bathroom in one simple color but then add a few tiles all highly
contrasting color in order to make a stark eye-catching design. Sometimes a wall
tiles mainly with ceramic tiles can be given real character by adding just one
or two glass tiles here and there. Sometimes a similar effect can be achieved by
adding just one or two ceramic tiles that have an ethnic pattern -- a touch of
design which can add an offbeat edge to an otherwise clean design.
In days gone by, using dark colored tiles would have been considered a design
mistake. It however with the huge range of colors now available for bathroom
tiles, this is not so, and a row of dark tiles, perhaps around the bathtub edge,
can really help to set-off the tiling design. Another auction is to use very
small tiles on just one wall in order to make contrast with the normal size
tiles in the rest of the bathroom. When using dark tiles, make sure that the
rest of the bathroom design fits in, perhaps ensuring that the overall theme of
the bathroom is that of the Mediterranean for instance.
But the huge range of sizes, styles, and colors now available there is no need
to stick to the old-fashioned white ceramic tile. Take a look at some of the
greats modern designs and see what they can do to bring your bathroom to
life.
