Bathroom Vanity Lighting: Getting It Right

Making sure that the lighting on your bathroom vanity is correct is one of the most important jobs you will do when it comes to designing your bathroom lighting. One of the major mistakes that many people make when putting the front lighting over the vanity is to use a fluorescent tube over the washbasin. This kind of lighting can shed a lot of light, but unfortunately it is the wrong type of light -- a type of light which makes using the vanity more difficult rather than easier.

The first thing you need to remember is that lighting on your vanity should not cast any shadows whatsoever. If the light does cast shadows you will find it very difficult to complete tasks such a shaving or applying makeup. Good bathroom vanity lighting should cast no shadows whatsoever and the color should be pure white. The lighting should not come from above -- or at least not solely from above, and should be offset by other types of lighting around the bathroom mirror.

The best type of lighting for a bathroom vanity should be on both sides of the mirror, and should be at the height which equates with the middle of the face -- usually about 6 feet above the floor. The light should also cast an equal brightness over the surface of the mirror, and this is best accomplished by making sure that the light source is an equal distance from the mirror's center. A popular option nowadays is to use a couple of sconces -- great for a light source that demands attention to a detailed task -- while another popular option is to use a couple of lamps at either side of the mirror.

Although having the light directly above the mirror can make for shadows on the face, it can be fine to install one once you have the proper side lighting installed. This is because the above-mirror light will add more light, while any tendency to throw shadows will be counteracted by the side lighting. If you have some other lighting in the bathroom, this can also be good to add a bit of extra illumination for the mirror.

Whatever type of lighting you choose, you should make sure that the light is pure white light, as this is the best to enable you to see exactly what you are doing. Many people choose fluorescent lights for this, though in recent years the use of halogen light has become popular due to the fact that the light is very pure.

The overall advice when choosing bathroom vanity lighting is to make sure that the lighting is functional. The last thing you want is to choose lighting that looks elegant but which throws deep shadows on your face, making it impossible -- or at the very least very difficult -- to put on makeup or shave. Follow the advice above to choose your bathroom vanity lighting with care and you should be able to get the type of lighting which looks good and enables you to a good job of the grooming you need to do in the bathroom.
