Bathroom Lighting: Things to Consider
When you want a room to be pleasant to live in you need to get the right
lighting -- and nowhere is the lighting more important than the bathroom. After
all, the bathroom is the place where you want to relax, and in order to get that
relaxing atmosphere you need to have lighting which adds to it rather than takes
away from it. When you're designing lighting for your bathroom, you need to
consider four types of lighting. These are:
- The natural light that comes from windows
- The general lighting, which usually comes from a single source in the ceiling
- Decorative lighting, that spotlights various design features
- Task lighting, which highlights special areas in order for tasks to be done
safely
Of all the types of lighting in the bathroom, natural light is one of the best.
There's something about natural light that adds a real feel of elegance to
bathroom, especially when the overall color scheme is light. In order to make
the most of the natural lighting available in your bathroom, make sure that the
window is not covered -- or at least covered as little as it needs to be. Keep
away from curtains which tend to block the light, and try to keep the window as
free as possible from any type of obstructions, allowing a large sheet of
natural light to come into the bathroom and bathe all the elements in a white
glow. In order to make sure that you can keep your privacy in the bathroom --
somewhere where it's essential -- it's a fairly easy job to replace any clear
glass windows with frosted glass or use a slightly opaque film. You could also
use Venetian blinds, which can be opened or closed to easily regulate the amount
of natural light coming into the room.
When considering the general lighting, you have to make sure that the amount of
light which comes from any single source in the ceiling is bright enough to
properly illuminate the room. Even if there is enough natural light, the natural
light will obviously not be there during the night. Therefore it is essential
that any general lighting source is adequate. One way to get away from using
just a single source of lighting, is to use recessed lights instead, which tend
to give much better illumination than just one bulb in the ceiling. Using
recessed lights in the bathroom will tend to give much better light, especially
when they are used around the edge and can therefore highlight the walls
properly. Another alternative is to use a chandelier, which can add a real air
of elegance to the bathroom, especially when the bathroom design is along
vintage lines.
Decorative lighting is very much down to personal choice, since it has nothing
to do with illuminating something such as the bathroom mirror in order to make
grooming easy - it is simply, as the name implies, there to give decoration to
the room. Decorative lighting should be used to accent special features within
the bathroom, which could include the surround to a mirror or some decoration on
the washbasin. Although not as important as task lighting, you do need to put
some thought into decorative lighting in the bathroom in order to give the room
that feeling of relaxation that every bathroom should have.
One of the most important times of lighting in the bathroom is what is known as
task lighting -- the type of lighting that is used when you are completing a
task that needs bright illumination. In the bathroom this could include things
such as a shaving, grooming the hair or applying makeup. What needs to be
avoided at all costs with this type of lighting is to install something which
will cast shadows -- the last thing you want when trying to groom yourself in
the bathroom mirror. A good idea is to use sconces to illuminate the bathroom
mirror, and install them at a height of about 6 feet. They should give excellent
lighting for a bathroom mirror and enable grooming and other tasks to be carried
out easily. Fluorescent lights are among the most popular for this type of
lighting, but halogen is also a good choice.
Of course, you don't have to choose all your bathroom lighting elements at once.
The best thing to do is to try to get the natural light correct first, and then
add the other elements later on, making sure the that the task lighting it up to
the job. Do this and you will have bathroom lighting that makes the room a
pleasure to be in -- and to bathe in of course.
